THE DUCKS OFFICIALLY BEGIN WORKOUTS FRIDAY UNDER SECOND-YEAR COACH MARK WASIKOWSKI. ROB MOSELEY | RELEASE DATE: 01/29/21 While waiting for the 2021 baseball season to arrive, Mark Wasikowski has been watching how things play out for other sports around the collegiate landscape as they compete during a pandemic. Among his takeaways: Some of the "bluebloods" of college athletics – think Kentucky men's basketball, or LSU football – haven't enjoyed the same level of success in recent months as in years past. And as the college baseball season nears, Wasikowski wants that on the minds of his Oregon baseball team. "I think you're going to see the same thing in college baseball," Wasikowski said. "Across the board, whether it's SEC or Pac or whatever." The Ducks begin practice Friday, and there seem to be two easy lessons to be drawn from Wasikowski's observation. The first: Even the best programs can be vulnerable to being thrown off track b

REGISTER GUARD: Oregon Ducks baseball to begin season Feb. 19 (1 photo, article)

ASHLEY CONKLIN | REGISTER-GUARD | 1:43 pm PST January 29, 2021 The Oregon baseball team will open its 54-game schedule Feb. 19 when the Ducks begin a four-game home series with Omaha at PK Park. Oregon went 8-7 last year in Mark Wasikowski's first year as the Ducks' coach in the COVID-19-shortened season. Wasikowski, a former Oregon assistant, had spent the previous three years as Purdue's coach. “After experiencing what we all have for the past 10 months, releasing the 2021 schedule is especially gratifying,” Wasikowski said in a news release. “Allowing the student-athletes the ability to play their beloved sport is one small step towards normalcy. Other college sports have shown that during this time, a certain fluidity to the schedule should be expected and we feel this will apply to us as well." The Ducks will have 31 of their 54 games at home. After playing four games in three days against Omaha (Feb. 19-21), Oregon will face Seattle in a four-game homestand (Feb.

REGISTER GUARD: Oregon's Yovan named to another preseason all-American team (2 photos, article)

Oregon designated hitter/pitcher Kenyon Yovan earned another preseason baseball all-American honor Monday when was he named to D1Baseball's third team. Yovan was named a first team preseason all-American by Collegiate Baseball in December. Yovan was off to a fast start in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the remainder of the baseball season. Yovan led the Ducks in hitting (.429), hits (24), home runs (4), runs (22), on-base percentage (.556), slugging percentage (.714) and walks (15) in earning first team all-American honors from Collegiate Baseball. He also had six multi-hit game and five three-hit games while finishing in the top three in the Pac-12 in seven offensive categories. Yovan is the only Oregon player ever named an all-American as both a hitter and a pitcher during his career. Yovan earned a spot on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (first team) and the Collegiate Baseball (second team) teams following his freshman season in 2017 as a pit

D1BASEBALL: 2021 Pac-12 Preview (1 photo)

This is a fascinating year for the Pac-12 in that every single program in the league is showing some version of upward trajectory. Realistically, not all of that positive momentum will bear fruit in 2021, but there is cause for optimism regardless. UCLA is the class of the league, a team that has Omaha written all over it. Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State and Washington make up the next tier, and all four should be in the mix for a regional. Cal and Stanford do not lack talent, but rough starts in 2020 and the cancellation of fall baseball leave both programs with significant question marks. The rest of league is made up of programs with recent and intriguing coaching changes, and those rosters are all trending up from a talent standpoint. Projected Regional Teams (4): UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State Player of the Year: Matt McLain, SS, UCLA Pitcher of the Year: Zach Pettway, RHP, UCLA Freshman of the Year: Jacob Berry, 3B, Arizona TOP PROSPECTS, 2021 DRAFT 17 Caleb

2021 D1Baseball Third-Team Preseason All-Americans SEASON PREVIEW D1 Baseball Staff - January 25, 2021 D1Baseball’s editors and national writers select the preseason All-America teams with one guiding principle in mind: to identify the best and most valuable college baseball players for the 2021 season. Past performance and future potential factor into the deliberations, but the goal is neither to identify the best future major leaguers nor to reward the players who have put up the gaudiest numbers in past seasons (particularly since the level of competition varies significantly from one conference to another). The objective is to select the players who would provide the most value for a team that wanted to win the College World Series in 2021 — the players who are best equipped to perform against elite college competition this spring. PERFECT GAME: Conference Preview: Pac-12 - Oregon (5 photos, article)

Image
Perfect Game Conference Preview: Pac-12 01/19/2021 Oregon: The 2021 Ducks offer a nice blend of veteran talent around the diamond, as well as a few young, exciting players who look to make their impression on the program right away. It’s more than fair to start with slugger Kenyon Yovan, one of the top power threats in the Pac-12, as he’ll be instrumental in the Ducks success this spring offensively, returning not only experience but potential two-way ability with a power arm from the right side. Aaron Zavala, like Yovan, was hitting north of .400 prior to last spring’s shutdown and possesses one of the purer hit tools on the team, showing a smooth and fluid left-handed stroke. The corner infield will be anchored by a pair of experienced bats in first baseman Gabe Matthews, an advanced defender with impact juice, and Nick Bellafronto, a grad transfer from Stanford who shows solid tools across the board. Jack Scanlon will get the start behind the dish and provides intriguing juice, part
