OREGONIAN: Oregon baseball takes rubber game with Arizona State to take opening series of Pac-12 play

Oregon used some small ball to win its opening series of Pac-12 play.

Tanner Smith, Aaron Zavala and Robby Ashford each had two hits in a 5-3 win for the No. 19 Ducks over Arizona State Sunday afternoon at PK Park.

Arizona State (12-5, 1-2 Pac-12) struck first via an error and RBI single by Ethan Long.

Kenyon Yovan hit an RBI double to get a run back in the bottom of the first and a passed ball allowed Gavin Grant to score and tie it in the third.

Oregon (10-4, 2-1 Pac-12) loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth and scored a pair of runs via ground outs.

Grant hit into a double play that allowed Ashford to score in the fifth and Sam Novitske reached on a fielder’s choice groundout that scored Yovan to make it 4-2 after six.

Justin Fall allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits, a walk and hit batter ans truck out two over five innings for the Sun Devils.

Long hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to get ASU within one and Grant got it back in the bottom of the inning with a sac fly of his own.

Brett Walker (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks and struck out two over five innings for UO. Nico Tellache allowed a run on two hits and struck out two over three innings and Kolby Somers picked up his third save of the season.

12/22/2020 "Eugene, Ore. – Oregon designated hitter Kenyon Yovan has been named a first-team preseason All-America pick by Collegiate Baseball. Last season, Yovan earned Collegiate Baseball first-team postseason honors as a designated hitter after leading Oregon in hitting (.429), hits (24), home runs (4), runs scored (22) and walks (15). He also topped the team in on-base percentage (.556) and slugging percentage (.714), while finishing with nine RBI, two doubles and a triple. Yovan finished the season with six multi-hit games including five 3-hit games. In the Pac-12 Conference, he finished in the top three in seven offensive categories while ranking in the top six in two more. Yovan was second in the league in slugging percentage and runs scored, third in batting average, OBP, hits, home runs (tied) and total bases and sixth in the conference in walks and hit by pitches.
