He made quick work of the Pilots in the first, sending down the side in order in just ten pitches. For the Pilots, Jack Folkins toed the rubber to mark his first ever collegiate appearance. In just his second pitch, Tanner Smith launched a home run off the right field roof to give Oregon an early 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the second, the Pilots shot themselves in the foot on multiple occasions. Robby Ashford led off the inning by reaching on an error as the two-sport athlete immediately stole second. OREGONIAN: Oregon baseball takes rubber game with Arizona State to take opening series of Pac-12 play

Oregon used some small ball to win its opening series of Pac-12 play. Tanner Smith, Aaron Zavala and Robby Ashford each had two hits in a 5-3 win for the No. 19 Ducks over Arizona State Sunday afternoon at PK Park. Arizona State (12-5, 1-2 Pac-12) struck first via an error and RBI single by Ethan Long. Kenyon Yovan hit an RBI double to get a run back in the bottom of the first and a passed ball allowed Gavin Grant to score and tie it in the third. Oregon (10-4, 2-1 Pac-12) loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth and scored a pair of runs via ground outs. Grant hit into a double play that allowed Ashford to score in the fifth and Sam Novitske reached on a fielder’s choice groundout that scored Yovan to make it 4-2 after six. Justin Fall allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits, a walk and hit batter ans truck out two over five innings for the Sun Devils. And that's fine with the second-year Oregon baseball coach. Because of COVID-19 protocols, Wasikowski and his coaching staff have had to change their practices significantly. The Ducks have begun fall practice and sometimes have as many as five practices a day in the era of physical distancing. While there are NCAA-mandated limits on how much practice time a player can have, there are no such limits for coaches. "From our standpoint, it's real simple," Wasikowski said during a recent Zoom call with the media. "Whatever they tell us to do, they tell us to wear masks, we wear masks. It's not a debate.
