Ducks overcome early mistakes for win

EUGENE — Robert Ahlstrom did not allow an earned run over six innings and Oregon scored multiple runs in three straight innings to rally for an 8-2 win over New Mexico State at PK Park in a nonconference game on Friday.

Oregon (14-6) uncharacteristically committed three early errors that led to two New Mexico State (10-12) runs in the first three innings, but Ahlstrom kept the Ducks in the game allowing just those two earned runs over six innings while allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.

How It Happened: NMSU took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning, but the Ducks jumped on Aggie starter Chris Jefferson (4-2) for three runs to take the lead.

Gavin Grant started the rally by drawing a walk, before moving to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Tanner Smith infield single. Anthony Hall, who had a five-hit game in the Arizona series finale on Sunday, put the Ducks on the board with a double into the right-field corner that scored Grant and moved Smith to third.

Kenyon Yovan followed with a base hit to center field driving in both Smith and Hall for his team leading 22nd and 23rd RBI of the season.

The Ducks added to the lead in the fourth. Robby Ashford walked with one out and moved to second on a Josh Kasevich base hit. Grant put the Ducks drove them both in on a double into the right field corner with Kasevich scoring after being obstructed by New Mexico State shortstop Brandon Dieter for a 5-2 lead. Grant, who moved to third on the throw to the plate, scored on the next pitch on a Smith RBI ground out.

Gabe Matthews made it 8-2 in the fifth. The Ducks' first baseman blasted his second home run of the series, a two-run shot, over the right-center field wall to give Oregon a six-run lead.

Notable: Matthews hit his second home run in as many days, marking just the second time he hit homers in back-to-back games (April 13 & 15, 2018 at Washington) and the first time he has hit them in back-to-back days … He extended his reached base streak to 17 games … Ahlstrom, who lowered his ERA to 2.17, did not allow an earned run for the third time in five starts including a pair where he went six-or-more innings … Grant had his first career multiple-RBI game … Yovan had his eighth multi-RBI game of the season and his third in a row … He now has 16 multi-RBI games … Hall had his third-multi-hit game of the season, and his second in the last three games …

Record Watch: Matthews' home run was the 17th of his career, tying him for ninth all-time in school history with Dave Roberts (1970-72) … He made his 193rd career start to pass Aaron Payne (2011-14) of second on Oregon's career list.

On Deck: The Ducks and Aggies finish their four-game series with a doubleheader at PK Park with a 12:05 first pitch. Oregon will send Cullen Kafka (2-1, 2.73) and Brett Walker (3-1, 4.21) to the mound looking for the sweep.

Oregon baseball erupts in middle innings to top New Mexico State

Oregon baseball’s offense did all its damage in a three-inning surge on Friday.

Kenyon Yovan, Gavin Grant and Gabe Matthews each drove in a pair for the No. 20 Ducks in a 8-2 win over New Mexico State Friday afternoon at PK Park.

The Aggies (10-12) scored a pair of unearned runs of Robert Ahlstrom in the first and third innings, but the Ducks took over from there.

Anthony Hall hit and RBI double and Yovan followed with a two-run single to give Oregon a 3-2 lead after three.

Grant hit a two-run double and Tanner Smith drove in another via a groundout in a three-run fourth.

Matthews added a two-run home run in the fifth to give Oregon (14-6) a commanding lead.

Ahlstrom allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks and struck out six over six innings and Scott Ellis, Decker Stedman and Caleb Sloan each had a scoreless inning of relief for UO.

The teams wrap up the series with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon.

Oregon baseball wins 8-2 to take game two of four-game series against New Mexico State

The Oregon baseball team won game two of their four-game series against New Mexico State on Friday by a score of 8-2.

Left-hander Robert Ahlstrom got the start for the Ducks, taking a 2.74 ERA and 1.00 WHIP to the mound.

The first batter he faced tapped an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by first baseman Gabe Matthews. With two outs and a runner on third, a routine fly ball clanked off right fielder Aaron Zavala’s glove for the Ducks’ second error of the inning. New Mexico State took a 1-0 lead in the first.

Ahlstrom didn’t let the sloppy first inning phase him, as he set the Aggies down in order in the second, striking out three in the first two innings.

The Ducks got their first baserunner in the second as Matthews was hit by a pitch, but they went down quietly without a hit for the remainder of the inning.

Ahlstrom allowed back-to-back singles in the third, with the lead runner advancing to third on another error by Zavala. A sacrifice bunt then gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

After Gavin Grant walked, the Ducks got their first hit in the bottom of the third as Tanner Smith beat out an infield single. Anthony Hall continued his hot streak since being inserted into the starting lineup, lining a sharp double to get the Ducks on the board.

Kenyon Yovan, starting at third base for the first time this season, came in clutch with a two-run single to put the Ducks on top, 3-2.

Oregon added three more runs in the fourth. Grant drove in two with a double, as Josh Kasevich was nearly thrown out at home but was granted the extra base, and the run, due to inference by the Aggies’ shortstop. Smith then brought in Grant with a groundout to make it 6-2.

Ahlstrom kept the Aggies at bay, working around walks in the fourth and fifth.

Matthews blasted a two-run homer to right-center in the bottom of the fifth, extending the Ducks’ lead to 8-2. It was the third home run of the season for Matthews as he continued to heat up.

Freshman Scott Ellis replaced Ahlstrom after six innings and pitched a scoreless seventh. Ahlstrom finished the day having allowed no earned runs with three hits and two walks while striking out six.

“I had a lot of my pitches working for me, which is always nice,” Ahlstrom said. “They scored that one, but my objective there was to keep it there and let the offense start working.”

Sam Novitske replaced Yovan at third base as the Ducks took an 8-2 lead to the ninth. After not a single ball was hit to Yovan all game, the first Aggies batter grounded out to third. Caleb Sloan recorded the final three outs with two strikeouts to seal the victory.

“I thought we were able to overcome a loose beginning with three mistakes at the beginning of the ball game,” head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “That didn’t unravel us, and we were able to sustain pressure.”

With the win, Oregon improves to 14-6 on the season. The Ducks will play games three and four of the series in a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
