Top of order, Cullen Kafka lead Oregon baseball past Arizona State to even series
The top of Oregon’s order inflicted regular damage and Cullen Kafka threw a gem to give the Ducks their first Pac-12 win of the season.
Tanner Smith went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, Kenyon Yovan and Gabe Matthews each hit two-run home runs and Cullen Kafka struck out 11 and allowed just four hits over seven shutout innings in a 7-1 win for No. 19 Oregon over Arizona State Saturday at PK Park.
“The slider was huge today, to really finish them off,” Kafka said. “Gota lot of swings and misses on it. And then the two-seam (fastball) came in to get those ground balls for double plays.
Yovan homered in the third and later walked before Matthews hit a blast, his first of the ear, in the sixth to give Oregon (9-4, 1-1 Pac-12) a 4-0 lead.
“It was a good bounce-back,” Matthews said. “That’s what today was all about: bouncing back. I thought we did that, offensively, defensively and pitching. Cullen had a hell of a game, and we got the bats going late in the game. Just a solid all-around performance, I thought.”
Tyler Thornton (1-1) allowed four runs on three hits and five walks and struck out five over five innings for Arizona State (12-4, 1-1 Pac-12)
Smith doubled in the seventh to score Sam Novitske, who hit a two-run single in the eighth.
The Sun Devils loaded the bases to open the ninth but got just one run off an RBI single by Kai Murphy before Andrew Mosiello got out of the jam to end it.
The teams play the rubber game of the series at Noon Sunday.
